As old school as it gets! I mean, they still use car hops! Food is exactly the same now as its been for decades! If you feel like walking down memory lane while clogging some ne arteries, come on down! Great food, friendly service always!

Everything is better with Velveeta! This place is new to me, but seems like it's a staple in Independence. The root beer is worth the drive and so is the service. Just the nicest staff working here to provide folks with delicious (and fresh) limeades, loose meat steamed burgers (aka: whiz burgers with their own zip seasoning), and 12 tots to go. It's charming in that nostalgic way, incredibly affordable, and definitely somewhere I'd go back to. Well done Mugs-Up!

Mugs up is a little burger spot close to Noland Rd. It's a drive up place, where the waitress walks up to your car. The burgers are loose meat, which was interesting. Decent flavor. The cheese was extremely soft and velvety. I was informed it was velveeta. The fries were crinkle cut and very crispy. Needed salt forsure. The fries mushrooms were delicious. They were crunchy and almost had a sweet taste in the batter. The chili cheese tots were okay, the tots were crisp and well cooked but I was turned off a bit by the sweet flavor of the chili. The cheese was good ole velveeta again. Last but not least, the root beer, it was sweet and syrupy. Not very much carbonation tho. You could tell it was made recently.

the hamburgers were very good and very unique. The root beer was delicious, but not as good as I think so in other people have said, maybe perhaps because I got it with ice

This is the best “loose meat” burger joint ever, but you gotta get the “WHIZ Burger” (I get two). These come with a thick layer of velvetta like cheese, pickles, onion, and mustard...unless you ask for them different. They are miracle burgers! Don’t bring your gay little kids here, they aren’t ready for this level of flavor. Tots on the side, if your feeling Clint Eastwood lucky do the chili cheese tots and you won’t be sorry. OH and I hear there rootbeer is good too.

Food was hot, fresh and delicious. Found this place by chance as I was driving through but I would definitely come back. The prices are great and the food is fresh. Burgers are a bit different then what you expect of a burger but I was pleased on the taste and the root beer was refreshing.

We waited over 15 minutes and they waited on two cars who came after us I hope it was not because I am a minority. When we bought it to their attention they could've cares less!

We come here at least a few times a year when we are in the are. They make there own root beer and will serve it up in a frosty mug on a tray that's hooks to your window. They are also known for there loose meat sandwich's that are pretty good. Very inexpensive drive in with great history and staff. We will always come back here.

I love mug style root beer, and when the virus clears up enough, I'll be getting me one! Food ain't to bad either! Another mom & pop place, that has survived the onslaught of burger, and other fast food giants, and while some of those places, went under, Bill and Ann's Mugs Up,has stood the test of time, and are,(I think) the last,or at the very least, one of the last Mugs Up drive-in's left standing in the metro! Givem a visit, and decide for yourself!

Drove from Prairie Village to get a zip burger. Was not disappointed but did miss this frosted mug root beer. Still root beer was fine in a styrofoam glass. Also the jumbo corn dogs are a nice touch. Surprised to see them so busy at 3:30 in the afternoon a good testimony I guess.

The not so secret hidden gem of Independence. Whats not to love? Try everything on their menu at least once. If you happen to not be a fan of Mugs up, GOOD! Less people in line for when I eat there!!!

Old school like it was in the 60's or maybe 50's. They have curbside service from carhops (who tell you to honk when u r ready to order food). The chili cheese whiz burgers are delicious & delectable!! Wash it down with a frosted mug of cold root beer!! If you are ever near here, make a special point to eat here! Old time food brings back pleasant memories from years gone by!!

I love Mugs-Up. They have been here for over 50 years and have the best root beer ever. The loose meat sandwiches are so good and the root beer floots are to die for. I remember as a little girl it was something special to go there with my family and get one. So glad there still there.

Our server was a blonde haired lady that was fantastic. Was my first time eating there and she explained the whole menu in a matter of seconds. She knew so much about it that it was easy to order. I had been there before for their famous root beer (which 8s spectacular) but for the first time eating, I have to say the food was fantastic. Thank you for all your hard work

I will proudly say that out of all the many restaurants that me and my mom ever went to and that's what we enjoyed to do small road trips even if it in town or out this has and will always be MY MOST FAVORITE HAND'S DOWN, I love the fact that I can still enjoy the best old school dinner type food and still $ with a family of 5 and still don't have to rob the jar of change but I add to it, and that's buying each person 3 things each and a gal of Root beer the Best in town. I am just passing it down line. Hope they are able to do the same one day

A wonderful ode to the past of America with interesting homestyle foods and extremely friendly staff. While my order was being created, the burrito broke in half and the woman who took my order came out of the building specifically to let me know there was a slight hold up and that is a wonderful gesture of kindness on her part.I would recommend Mugs Up to anyone who enjoys traditional American food and has a knack for the past as it is a great display of both of those things.

This is a good hole in the wall, Independence little secret! I love this place! I dont have the time to go into details of how much I love this place, but their burgers and chili cheese fries are to die for! Then there is their homemade root-beer! If you eat there, you have to try their root beer in the frosted mugs!

This place is a landmark. Been here forever. Their rootbeer is the best around. You can get it by the gallon. If you go to eat, get the frosty mug. Don't get it to go because it waters down. The zip burger is very unique. You have to try it. It's hard to explain. The deep fried burrito is good too. How can you go wrong with something deep fried 😁 The tots are average, not disappoint but there are other places much better. It's been years since I've been (way before Google reviews) I need to go back again soon.

This is one of those places that give you a glimpse back in time. I have been going here since I was a little girl. Many memories of hot summer days with my grandma drinking a cold root beer and munching on a Whiz burger. The menu is still very much the same as far as I can remember and there is a variety of options for the picky eaters. It is a good ol’ fashioned drive in, where you are greeted by live car hop and served I’m your lunch through the window of your car. The loose meat burgers have a taste I have never experienced elsewhere, so don’t come expecting a HiBoy, Big Boy or Sonic type food , you will be disappointed as Mugs Up stands alone in the area as a true one of a kind.

Food was absolutely delicious! Definitely can be remodel or rebuilt, at the same time keeping the same retro style theme! Otherwise it just look like a dumpy building to work in!

Homemade root beer served in a frosty mug or in a to-go cup. There have delicious root beer floats (black cows) and orange soda floats (orangaroos). Loose meat burgers similar to Maid-Rite burgers. They also have great hot dogs. Carhop drive-in experience. Excellent prices. Closed on Sundays. They accept both cash and cards.

Take a step back to a simpler time and enjoy the atmosphere of yesteryear when carhops take your order and hand deliver your meal and hang the tray on the window and don't forget the in house made Rootbeer.

I got a wiz burger a buffalo dog and a mugs up root beer the buffalo dog was pretty good its basically a buffalo chicken taquito the wiz burger is like a sloppy joe with mustard and other seasonings which everything was good but the bun on one side was slightly hard and stale that's why I give it 4 stars but my girlfriend got some chicken nuggets which I tried a few because she couldn't eat them all they are huge and tasty and filling second best thing next to the root beer

Love this place they serve loose meat burgers similar to maid rite and have been operating in Independence for around 50 years. It’s a cool drive up style restaurant and is very affordable. They have homemade root beer and the black cows and orangaroos are very good ( root beer float and orange float). If your in the area it’s definitely worth trying out.

This is a delightful surprise! The prices are so so reasonable (so low you'll think it's a typo, or you'll question if you want to try it), but absolutely give them a try!!!!! Rootbeer was fantastic and so was the tenderloin sandwich! The service was wonderful, our carhop was so friendly, and it has a nostalgic feel of days long gone. Loved our lunch there!
